Duke-NCSU Engineering Teaching Fellows Program

Giving away 64 IBM PC's donated by Microsoft Research University Programs to our Partnership Schools

On December 5-6, 2000 Dr. Ybarra distributed 64 IBM computers to six public schools across four N.C. counties. A company in Cary, NC called Merisel went out of business and sold all of its computers. Dr. Ybarra was given a check for $10,000 from Microsoft Research to Duke. He rented a Ryder truck, and with the help of some of his students, he loaded up the computers and distributed them to A.B. Combs Elementary (10), Washington Elementary (10), Centennial Middle School (10), E.K. Powe Elementary (15), Central Elementary (10) and Bethel Hill Charter School (9).

Dr. Gary Ybarra (Director of Undergraduate Studies of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Duke), Joe Berryhill (Chairman of the Board of Directors) and John Betterton (Principal) unloading the IBM Computers at Bethel Hill Charter School in North Person County.

Dr. Ybarra hands Ms. Treva Fitts (Science Specialist) a stack of IBM computer keyboards as 15 IBM computers are donated to E.K. Powe Elementary School in Durham.

Duke Engineering Teaching Fellow, Greg Garbos (who is also the Duke Blue Devil Mascot), hands Keith Lindsey a computer monitor in the unloading process at E.K. Powe Elementary School.
